Agriculture of Iran

 

According to the World Food Organization (FAO), the world's major agricultural products are based on 66 agricultural products (41 crops and 25 livestock products). Iran to produce a third of the world's main products is the top ten countries.

The wide range of temperature fluctuation in different parts of the country and the multiplicity of climatic zones make it possible to cultivate a diverse variety of crops, including cereals (wheat, barley, rice, and maize (corn)), fruits (dates, figs, pomegranates, melons, and grapes), vegetables, cotton, sugar beets and sugarcane, pistachios , nuts, olives, spices e.g. saffron, raisin(world's third largest producer & second largest exporter), tea, tobacco, Berbers(world's largest producer) and medicinal herbs. More than 2,000 plant species are grown in Iran; only 100 of which are being used in pharmaceutical industries. The land covered by Iran's natural flora is four times that of Europe. Wheat, rice, and barley are the country's major crops.

Wheat: According to the FAO, Iran is the 12th leading producer of wheat in the world, with an average production of 14 million tons in 2011.

Rice: Iran's total rice production stands at 2.2 million tons per annum whereas annual consumption is about three million tons. The average per capita consumption of rice in Iran is 45.5 kg, which makes Iranians the 13th biggest rice consumers.

Sugar: Iran had a shortage of 400,000 tons to 600,000 tons of sugar nationwide.

Pistachio: Iran ranks the world's largest pistachio producer and exporter. After oil and carpets, pistachios are Iran's biggest exports: about 200,000 tons.  Iran's share in the global pistachio market reached 50 percent in 2011.

Saffron: Saffron is cultivated in many regions of the country. Iran's saffron is exported to the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Japan, Turkmenistan, France, Italy and US. The northeastern Khorasan Razavi province exported 57 tons of saffron worth $156.5 million to 41 countries in 2011. Iran is the largest producer of Saffron with 93.7% of the world's total production.

Tea: Tea production was 35,000 tons in 2011.

A number of fruits have originated in Iran, including Persian walnut, Muskmelon, Lime and Pomegranate. Iran is blessed with a variety of favorable meteorological conditions; suitable for fruit production. The southern seaside lands of the Caspian Sea, and Iran supplies finest conditions for citrus production. Due to the available statistics, Iran now ranks 1st in the globe in the production of Pomegranate, 2nd in Date, 3rd in Common fig, 3rd in Cherry, 7th in Grape and 7th in Orange.

 

Production and ranking

Iran ranks 1st in fruit production in the Middle East and North Africa. 2.7 million hectares of orchards are being harvested in Iran with an annual production this year of 16.5 million tons. Per capita production of fruit in the globe is 80 kilograms while in Iran it is 200 kg according to official FAO statistics. Last Iranian calendar year Iran produced 4.5 million tons of citrus fruits and 3 million tons of apples. Iran has been ranked between 8th  and 10th  in global fruit production in different years. 50 kinds of fruits are grown in Iran. Last year Iran exported 2$ billion worth of fruit to countries in the region and the European Union which is 46 percent more than the year before. Iran is one of the major leading producer and exporters of dried fruit such as all kinds of pistachios, Sultana raisins, Golden raisins, Sun-Dried raisins, Malayer Raisins, Kashmar Raisins, all kinds of Iranian Dates and with its modern facilities is ready to provide its customers with all these products. Also Iran due to weather, Four Seasons, able to export all kinds of flowers especially fresh cut flowers in all seasons is cultivated.

Iran exported kind of foodstuff  such as : Soft drinks, mineral water, biscuit, chocolate, confection, edible oil, dairies, conserved foods and fruits, jam and jelly, macaroni, fruit juice and yeast were among the main exports to Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and other Central Asian countries, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Syria, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, France, Canada, Venezuela, Japan, South Korea and Turkey.
