  • Mashhad Mashhad is located in north-west Iran close to borders of two countries Afghanistan and Turkmenistan and between two mountain ranges of Binalood and hezarmasjed, 900 Kilometers east of Tehran at the center of the Razavi Khorasan Province. Tourist Attractions in Mashhad

 

Every year, the Tourist Attractions in Mashhad draw tourists in large numbers where is, the second largest city in Iran. Many grand Mosques, large bazaars and Mausoleums form the major Tourist Attractions in Mashhad.

Mashhad is the capital of the immense Province of Khorasan. Situated in the Kashaf Rud valley, a tributary of Hari Rud, between the Binalud and Hazar Masjid mountains it is a rich agricultural region situated in the north-east of the country. Spread over an area of 204 square kilometers, it has for centuries been an important trade center. It has also served as a junction point on caravan routes and highways from India to Iran and from north to east between Turkmenistan towns and Afghanistan.

 

Imam Reza Holy Shrine

Imam Reza shrine is a complex which contains the mausoleum of Imam Reza, the eighth Imam of Twelve Shi'ites. It is the largest mosque in the world by dimension and the second largest in capacity. Also contained within the complex include: the Goharshad Mosque, a museum, a library, four seminaries, a cemetery, the Razavi University of Islamic Sciences, a dining hall for pilgrims, vast prayer halls, and other buildings.

This complex is the center of tourism in Iran. The shrine itself covers an area of 267,079m2 while the seven courtyards which surround it cover an area of 331,578 sqm - totaling 598,657 sqm.

 

Goharshad Mosque

This is a famous Mosque in Mashhad. The 50 meter high faience dome and cavernous golden portal is located to the south of the holy shrine of Imam Reza square. Architecturally the Mosque is even more important than the mausoleum. The Mosque covers an area of 9419 square meters, and has two beautiful minarets each 40 meters high.

 

The Nader Shah Mausoleum

This Mausoleum located in Shohada Street is dedicated to the legendary emperor of Iran, Nadir Shah. Set up in the year 1959, the mausoleum has a colossal bronze group representing soldiers led to battle by a commander on horseback. It is about 5 meters high and weighs 14,000 kilograms. The commander bearing a turban and a large ax represents Nader Shah. It is very beautiful to visit.

 

Bazaar-e-Reza, Mashhad

This 800 meters long and 30 meters wide market is one of the main shopping centers in the town. The bazaar is known for the crafts and souvenirs of Khorasan. All kinds of local souvenirs such as fur-cloak, turquoise, gold, pelisse, perfume, carnelian ring, saffron, prayer-mat, and rosary may be found in this bazaar. Beautiful fabrics, rugs, prayer rugs, beads, nuts, spices and honey are also available.

Get in

Mashhad International Airport (Hashemi Nejad Airport)

There are flights from all the cities which have flight to Mashhad. The large cities like Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz have flight everyday maybe more than 2~3 times a day.

One of the routes to reach Mashhad is from Kish Island. Mahan Air flies 6 times per week and Kish Air flies three times per week from Kish Island to Mashhad. The flight takes around 2 hours.

There are International flights to Bahrain, Damascus, Dubai, Kuwait, Almaty, Beirut, Jeddah, Dushanbe, Kabul, Doha, Bishkek, Lahore and Istanbul.

 

By train

There are more than 3 different trains in different prices and qualities every day. It’s about 10~14 hours way.

There are trains from Ashgabat and Merv to the Sarakhs border. And at the other side of the border there is a daily train from Sarakhs border to Mashhad.

 

By bus

There are mostly night buses to Mashhad from most of the important cities. There are international buses from Harat in Afghanistan.

 

Get out

To Turkmenistan

Since no public transportation goes across the Turkmen border, to get to Ashgabat in Turkmenistan, the following option is the most convenient:

Take a bus From Mashhad to Quchan: every 2 hours from 6.30am. Duration: 2h30.

From Quchan, take a private taxi to Bajgiran (village at the border). Duration: about 1h.

At Bajgiran, go to the border (opening time: 7.30 - 15.30 Iran time). Crossing the border can take up to 2 hours. In the Turkmenistan side, take a taxi to Ashgabat. Duration: about 1h.

 

To Afghanistan

Herat in Afghanistan is only a few hundred kilometers from here.
