  • TABRIZ Tabriz is the fifth largest city and one of the historical capitals of Iran and the capital of East Azerbaijan Province. Situated at an altitude of 1,350 meters. The city has proven extremely influential in the country’s recent history. Tabriz is located in a valley to the north of the long ridge of the volcanic cone of Sahand, south of the Eynali mountain. The valley opens out into a plain that slopes gently down to the northern end of Lake Urmia, 60 km to the west. With cold winters and temperate summers the city is considered a summer resort. The estimated population of the city is around 1,700,000. Tabriz is the fourth most populous city in Iran after Tehran, Mashhad, and Esfahan, and is also a major Iranian heavy industrial and manufacturing center. Some of these industries include automobile, machine tools, oil and petrochemical and cement production.

Regarding as the center of Azerbaijan, an immense area in the northwestern Iran, Tabriz has been the center of trade and tourism since the distant past. Blue Mosque (Masjed-e-Kabod)

It is a famous mosque, the interior and exterior facades of which are decorated with some of the finest tile-mosaic in Iran. Dating back to the 15th century, it is a triumph architecturally.

 

Arg of Tabriz

Arg or citadel of Tabriz dates back to the 14th century. It is an evidence of heroic resistance of the city’s people to the invaders. Arg is one of the tourist attractions of Tabriz.

 

El Goli

It is a big park containing an impressive building and a vast pool encircled by lofty trees in the center. From this garden, you can see a large red cliff overlooking the valley of the Taikel River which was through Tabriz. This beautiful pavilion dates back to Qajar’s era.

 

Kandovan

Kandovan is situated in Oscoo town, close to Tabriz. In this village, a unique architecture suitable for mountainous areas has developed. The village’s people have managed to preserve their traditions in the course of history. There are something's especial which are, the mineral springs of Kandovan that are tourist attractions. The people of the village have dug big holes in the mountain and the holes are made the form of House and all are living at them yet.

 

Jolfa

Church Saint Stephen, being of considerable attraction architecturally, is in 16 km west to this village.The beautiful construction of this church dates back to 10- 12 AC. There are so many calligraphies in Armenian language in this church, which refers to the way of its construction. Another attracting Church in this city is Holy Mary’s Church the construction of which refers to 16 AC. Many Armenians come to visit this church annually.

 

Kalibar

This town is located 165 km northeast of Tabriz. The Arras River crosses this district from the northern part, and the famous Castle of Babak in this town is located on the mountain. It is located 2600 m high, west to Kaleibar.

By plane

 There are daily flights from Tehran on Iran Air, Mahan air and other companies. Direct flights from Dubai have just started on Tue and Sat, operated by Kish. Direct flights from Tbilisi, operated by ATA air   and Georgian Airway  .Direct flights from Baghdad have just started on Fri and Mon, operated by ATA Air. Direct flights from Baku have just started on Tue and Sat, operated by Kish Air. Direct flights from Gaziantep have just started on Tue, operated by Sky Airlines. Direct flights from Istanbul, operated by Turkish airlines, Iran air and ATA air are also direct flights from Damascus.

 

By car

By the newly built bridge over the Urmia lake Tabriz is reachable from Urmia in 1.5 hours. There is a road to Tehran (capital) too.

 

By train

Daily train from Tehran. 12 Hours travel.

Weekly to and from Istanbul, twice a week to Van

 

By bus

Bus relations with major cities. 6-8 Hours travel from Tehran.

 

Get around

City transport is limited to Taxis, shared taxis and buses. Taxis can be chartered for a modest fee (around 20 USD if you need a driver and car for the whole day to visit the region) also there are shared taxi and bus for various paths.

 

Get out

There are comfortable night trains to Tehran. There is 2nd class sleeping train (6 people in one room) that leaves Tabriz at 8.30PM and arrives to Tehran at 9.30 AM. The more comfortable choice is to take 1st class train. This train leaves at 5.30 PM and arrives to Tehran at 6 AM. There are 4 bed-rooms with TV and dinner is included in that price.
